Efe Ambrose another potential quality acquisition for Lampard

Frank Lampard’s Derby County find themselves within touching distance of the playoff spots despite suffering a slight dip in form of late, and with current starter Curtis Davies out for the season will be hoping former Celtic man Efe Ambrose can help reinforce their defence.

Ambrose, who’s been a free agent since leaving Hibernian in January, has had great success in Scotland making 168 appearances for Celtic and winning the Scottish Premiership four times. Still, is now seemingly turning his attention to a market he’s never competed in before – England.

He has also represented Nigeria on 51 occasions, including an appearance in the 2014 World Cup squad and winners medal in the African Cup of Nations back in 2013.

On the potential deal, Lampard told the Derby Telegraph, “it’s close to being finalised but not quite done, so I don’t want to jump the gun.”

Should Lampard manage to complete the short-term signing of Ambrose we’d consider it one of his best bits of business yet.

Not only will he come for free, which will be welcomed by the Derby County boardroom, but he’ll also arrive with heaps of experience and would provide some very healthy competition for current starters Richard Keogh and Fikayo, whose positions have been relatively unchallenged following injury problems and transfers.

Of course, there’s every chance that Ambrose could see very little first-team action, considering his career has taken a bit of a dip since representing the current Scottish champions, but we cannot ignore the fact that the pros vastly outweigh the cons.
