The Everton fans in the Transfer Tavern have been patiently awaiting news regarding the long-term future of Romelu Lukaku…
The Belgian forward has been on fire this season, having already bagged 18 Premier League goals so far, with the 23-year-old undoubtedly one of the Premier League’s deadliest attackers.
Expectedly, this led to speculation earlier this year suggesting that the Belgian couild be a primary target for clubs this summer – with Yahoo Sport, in particular, suggesting that Chelsea could make a move.
However, it seems as though those fears have been put to bed – at least in the short term – with TalkSport reporting that Lukaku is closing in on signing a new five-year-deal at Everton.
TalkSport are reporting that the deal will be confirmed this week as the Blues look to prepare for next season with Lukaku on board.
This is certainly a huge boost for the Toffees, with Lukaku undoubtedly one of their most important players. Offering dynamic attacking and powerful hold-up play, he really makes the Merseyside-based side tick.
You would expect that the deal will include a hefty increase on his current reported £90,000 per week salary – with the Belgian certainly deserving a significant pay rise.
However, our landlord isn’t so sure that this new deal will do much to secure Lukaku’s future long-term. It may be enough to keep him at the club this summer, but we have seen with the likes of Luis Suarez and Dimitri Payet how little contracts mean in modern football. He is expecting Chelsea to remain keen long-term.
