Sky Sports presenter Jeff Stelling labelled Everton as ‘awful’ on Saturday prior to the clash with Wolves 24 hours later.
The Lowdown: Worrying times…
The Toffees are still flirting with relegation under Frank Lampard, with the likes of Norwich, Watford, Burnley and Leeds also in real danger.
Will Everton stay up?
I'm not so sure now!
It seems as if three of the five teams mentioned will drop down to the Championship next season, with the Merseysiders suffering a 5-0 defeat to Tottenham last Monday.
The Sky Sports panel were discussing all things Everton on Saturday ahead of today’s match with Wolves, and Stelling didn’t hold back.
The Latest: Stelling’s ‘awful’ claim
Talking live on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday, as relayed by Goodison News, the presenter opened up the conversation on Everton by saying it would be a ‘good time for Everton fans to leave the room’, labelling the Toffees as ‘awful’. He said:
“Could Everton be heading to the Championship?”
“Let’s talk about Everton, a good time for Everton fans to leave the room.
“This is a side now with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison and Doucoure playing and still they look awful.”
The Verdict: A season to forget for Everton
The 2021/22 campaign has been one to forget at Goodison Park, and the majority of Toffees fans will just want to fast forward to the summer with the club still in the Premier League. There is still work to be done for that to happen, though, and the next two months will be crucial.
It would be unthinkable for the club to drop down to the Championship given that their squad value comes to £408.38m (as per Transfermarkt), the eighth highest in the top flight, but hopefully Lampard can steer his side to safety, making Stelling’s remarks a distant memory.
