The Liverpool Echo journalist Adam Jones has given his reaction to some news now emerging from Everton.

The Lowdown: Russian sponsorship suspensions

The Merseyside club have recently released a statement revealing that they have now suspended all commercial sponsorship agreements with Russian companies USM, Megafon and Yota, after the country’s invasion of Ukraine.

They all have strong ties to Uzbek-born Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov, who holds commercial ties at Goodison Park.

The Latest: Jones reacts

Taking to Twitter, Jones has now given his reaction to the news, claiming that it is 'huge' for the Toffees:

"Huge news coming from EFC as the club have suspended all sponsorship agreements with USM, Megafon and Yota."

The Verdict: Right call

With all of the controversy surrounding the presence of Russian money in football following the events in Ukraine, it was the right call from the Blues to end the Russian sponsorships effective immediately.

It may cost them money in the short-term, but they will benefit much more in the longer term by maintaining standards and principles at the club.

Of course, this also means that ties have now been cut with Usmanov, and so EFC may now explore another form of revenue that they can get in to replace what has been lost.

Nonetheless, it is a decision that the fans will no doubt be proud of as the conflicts continue between both countries, with the ultimate hope that peace will be found.
