Everton: David Ornstein claims Frank Lampard still liked behind the scenes

The Athletic’s David Ornstein has revealed that despite poor results, Frank Lampard is still well-liked at Everton.

The Lowdown: Difficult situation

Lampard is currently going through what could be the most difficult period of his managerial career as he has Everton sitting above the bottom three by one point amid fan frustrations following their latest result.

Everton were embarrassed at Goodison Park in midweek, with their 4-1 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion leading to audible boos, chants for the board to be sacked and smoke bombs being thrown onto the pitch.

The Toffees appointed Lampard when they were languishing in 16th last season and he has not managed to guide them away from that spot, albeit without star man Richarlison to call upon.

The Latest: Lampard still well-liked despite results

Speaking in the aftermath of Tuesday’s result, Ornstein was reviewing the morning papers live on Sky Sports and revealed what he’s hearing behind the scenes around Everton amid Lampard’s uncertain future.

He said: “Yes, Frank Lampard, as the article suggests, has a worse win percentage than any of his seven predecessors, dating back to David Moyes – but that’s just the statistics.

“If you speak to people at and around Everton, they speak of him inheriting a real mess there, and he’s popular among players.

“I spoke to Demarai Gray for an interview a while ago, and although he was actually very loyal to Rafa Benitez, who had signed him, he’d learned to love Frank Lampard, and I think that’s the same for a lot of the players.”

The Verdict: Moshiri with a tough decision

Farhad Moshiri has gone through a number of managers over the last few years and none of them have managed to yield the desired results or performances, so the question has to be whether or not sacking Lampard will actually fix anything.

Many Evertonians made sure their voices were heard last night by chanting for the board to leave, and it would appear that the problems are much bigger than Lampard or any manager given how poor they’ve been for a long time now.

It is true that Lampard does indeed now have the worst win percentage of any Everton manager since David Moyes, and that should set alarm bells ringing within the fanbase and Goodison Park regarding his future.
