Our Everton fans here in the Transfer Tavern are seriously looking forward to seeing how their side is going to do today with it being Deadline Day.
The Blues have been one of the most impressive outfits in the market this summer and, with that in mind, it would be fitting for them to finish in an impressive flourish.
It looks as though, too, that that is what they are planning with the Liverpool Echo claiming that a loan bid for Belgian international Thomas Vermaelen has been made with a view to a permanent deal.
The experienced defender would undoubtedly bolster Everton’s defensive options – particularly on the left hand side of the pitch – and so it makes sense to try and bring him in.
Indeed, with top European experience from his days with Arsenal and Barcelona – amongst others – he’d surely help the Toffees in their quest to go well in the Europa League this season.
Of course, there have been fitness problems with him before, but if he can stay fit he is still a top defender and would be a fine signing to round out the window.
Landlord’s Verdict
Thomas Vermaelen is a well-accustomed player to the Premier League and would surely be a good asset to the Toffees.
With Leighton Baines getting on at left-back and the club perhaps short of one more centre-half, signing Vermaelen would kill both birds with one stone.
Let’s see if the club can get it done.
