Everton: Journalist reveals why Marcelo Bielsa may have opted against taking the job

Bielsa

Journalist Phil Hay has admitted that Mexico are confident of landing Marcelo Bielsa amid his rejection towards Everton.

The Lowdown: Everton look to have their man

After a short yet drawn-out process this week Everton look to have finally found Frank Lampard’s successor in the form of out-of-work boss Sean Dyche who is set to be appointed today.

The former Burnley manager will bring a whole load of experience battling against relegation to Everton, as they will know having come up against him in a tight battle last season.

However, Dyche was certainly not the only candidate with former Leeds United manager Bielsa reportedly Farhad Moshiri’s top target to replace Lampard and the Argentinian manager even jetted into London yesterday for talks.

The Latest: Bielsa has his eyes on other projects

Reports have suggested Bielsa told Everton he didn’t want the job and now Hay has revealed on The Phil Hay Show that the former Leeds boss is being tipped to take over as the Mexico national manager.

He said: (33:25) “It’s Thursday afternoon as we speak, there have been reports this afternoon that he’s actually in London now and he’s travelled to England, I honestly can’t say if that’s true or not I don’t know but let’s assume that it is.

“Everton seem to want to have this done as in have an appointment before the weekend [but] there are strong suggestions over the water that Mexico want Bielsa and they feel they might be quite close to doing that.”

The Verdict: Moshiri looks to have made a sensible decision

While reports suggested that Bielsa was Moshiri’s number one appointment it simply wouldn’t have made sense given the finances involved and the demands he would put on an Everton squad in a perilous position.

Therefore, it appears as though the Everton owner has finally listened to more sensible and football-minded people around him to appoint someone such as Dyche that has been there and done it successfully in a relegation battle.

It’s also an interesting turn of events for Bielsa to have jetted into England, not land the Everton job but have the Mexican one lined up if this Premier League move didn’t materialise, so it may not be long until he ends up back in management.
