Everton: Toffees have rejected Anthony Gordon bid from Newcastle

Goodison Park, Liverpool, Britain - May 15, 2022, Everton's Anthony Gordon during the match.

Everton rejected an offer from Newcastle United for winger Anthony Gordon, according to The i‘s Northern Football Correspondent Mark Douglas.

The lowdown

The Toffees have already lost Richarlison, their top scorer from last season, to Spurs during this summer’s transfer window. At £60m, it was the second biggest sale in the club’s history, ranking only behind Romelu Lukaku’s £75m move to Manchester United in 2017.

Gordon came through the youth ranks at Goodison Park and established himself last term, starting 25 of the Blues’ 38 Premier League matches. Under contract until the summer of 2025, he would apparently cost in the region of £35m (via CaughtOffside).

The latest

Douglas writes for The i that Newcastle have submitted offers for Everton’s Gordon, as well as Leeds United’s Jack Harrison, but have seen both ‘turned down’ by the respective clubs.

They clearly failed to meet the Toffees’ demands as they operate ‘within the parameters of financial fair play’ in their pursuit of ‘top targets’.

The verdict

It seems that Newcastle’s interest reached an advanced stage, but to their credit, Everton held firm.

They should be desperate to keep hold of Gordon, who not only won the club’s Young Player of the Season award last term but also the Player’s Player of the Season.

Former Everton manager Rafael Benitez has called him ‘very explosive‘, while pundit Alan Shearer has praised him for being ‘fearless‘.

Newcastle have still yet to sign a wide player this summer, so there’s a possibility that they will come back in for him.

Everton’s best bet of warding them off is by tying down Gordon to a new contract, and according to Football Insider, the two parties have been in talks in that regard since the middle of last month.
