Newcastle United fans here in the Tavern are desperate to see improvements in the summer months, as Rafa Benitez will look to ring in the changes before the start of the new campaign. 

It’s fair to say that Rafa Benitez hasn’t enjoyed the best of times at St James’ Park just yet, as owner Mike Ashley continues to play in the back of his mind.

Although, the club won’t be worrying about the summer transfer window too much after seeing how their January signings have fared in the current campaign. And, with potential to bring the loan signings in on a permanent deal in the summer and then add to the squad further, the future looks bright for Newcastle United.

However, the club appear to be looking in the wrong direction for a central defender in the summer months, as Newcastle are reportedly interested in West Bromwich Albion’s Jonny Evans. But, with the Northern Ireland international struggling to keep the Baggies up in the current campaign, many of our local northerners are beginning to question his ability.

So, Newcastle United should look to sign ONE of these TWO relegation battlers instead…

Xherdan Shaqiri

The 26-year-old raised eyebrows when he decided to join Stoke City back in 2015, and he hasn’t disappointed since. Indeed, the winger has been one of the Potters’ main contributors in the current campaign, as he continues to play a huge part in securing another season in the Premier League.

Although, a move to Newcastle United may be something that interests the former Inter Milan attacker, with Stoke City’s safety being all but confirmed.

Of course, Newcastle would be getting themselves arguably one of the Premier League’s most dangerous wide players, that has the ability to tear apart any defence on his day.

So, there really are no flaws to a deal for the talented Xherdan Shaqiri, as the Magpies should waste no time in bringing him to St James’ Park.

James Ward-Prowse

James Ward-Prowse was tipped to be a future English national team star when he first broke onto the scene at St Mary’s, but his career hasn’t quite taken off in that direction as he has struggled to live up to the hype.

Although, there’s no doubt that the Englishman can turn on the style in the biggest of matches for the Saints, as a wonder goal or a piece of brilliance never seems to be too far away.

Encouragingly, both Newcastle United and the 23-year-old would benefit from a deal that sends him to St James’ Park, with the Magpies struggling for consistency in midfield areas at times this season, and Ward-Prowse being on the verge of relegation with current club Southampton.
