Forget Shaw: Tottenham should sign 1 of these 2 left backs this summer instead

Tottenham supporters have been hugely upbeat in the Transfer Tavern in recent times after seeing their team edge closer to a first trophy since 2008 after beating Swansea City 3-0 in the last eight of the FA Cup on Saturday.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men got the better of AFC Wimbledon, Newport County, and Rochdale to reach the quarter-finals of the world’s oldest club competition, yet they were made to work by the latter two EFL sides, who deservedly forced replays against the North London outfit. Nevertheless, Spurs were near their fluent best on Saturday to dispatch of the Swans, with a Christian Eriksen brace alongside Erik Lamela’s first half strike securing an easy victory for Pochettino’s side, thus earning them a spot in the last four where they will face Manchester United next month.

Thus, there have been many buoyant Tottenham fans in the Tavern in the last few days, several of whom are hoping their side can end a decade-long silverware drought by going on to win the FA Cup this season.

In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Spurs supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking them with a summer move for United defender Luke Shaw, whose future at the North West outfit has become even more unclear in recent days.

The 22-year-old has ultimately struggled to make a meaningful impact since his move to Old Trafford back in 2014, earning just 62 appearances for the club given injury troubles and a seemingly strained relationship with current manager Jose Mourinho.

And things took a turn for the worse over the weekend as Mourinho heavily criticised the left back for his display against Brighton in the FA Cup, and reports suggest that the 22-year-old could well seek a summer move to end his United nightmare.

And Spurs are one side reportedly keen on luring the England international away from Old Trafford, yet they should actually forget about a move for Shaw and instead land one of these TWO left backs this summer…

Ryan Sessegnon

17-year-old Ryan Sessegnon has been making huge strides at Championship side Fulham in the last few years, to the point that he has been linked with some of the biggest clubs in the country.

The England Under-19 international only made his senior debut for the Cottagers back in August 2016 but he has since then scored 21 goals and laid on nine assists in 71 appearances for Slavisa Jokanovic’s side, 14 goals and five assists of which coming this term in their Championship promotion push.

Tottenham are one side reportedly keen on the youngster, who is also hugely adept at playing further up the pitch down the left-hand-side, and given Pochettino’s track record of developing young players, Spurs would surely have a star on their hands if they land Sessegnon this summer.

Ryan Bertrand

Southampton’s precarious Premier League position is likely to call into question the future of several of their star players, not least left back Ryan Bertrand.

The 28-year-old has impressed so much for the Saints in the last few years that he is now England’s number one choice left back, moving ahead of the likes of Shaw, Danny Rose, and Leighton Baines in recent times such have been his consistently high-level displays.

But were the South Coast club to go down, or maybe even not, Bertrand could well be on the lookout for better things this summer, and Spurs could do a lot worse than go after the ex-Chelsea ace this summer.
