Tottenham supporters in the Transfer Tavern are very much looking forward to the new Premier League season following the news that both Mauricio Pochettino and Harry Kane have signed new long-term deals with the club.
46-year-old Pochettino took over at the North London outfit back in 2014 and has since transformed Spurs into one of the best teams in the country, having achieved three successive top four finishes in the Premier League. And England international Kane has become one of the best strikers in world football in the last few years in scoring a staggering 140 goals in 213 games for Tottenham, with his tally of 41 this term the highest number he has achieved in a single season.
Thus, there are many thrilled and excited Spurs supporters in the Tavern at present, several of whom are likely to be intrigued by recent reports suggesting that Manchester United do not have defender Toby Alderweireld high on their summer wish-list.
And these fresh reports may indicate that the £36 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) could well be staying in North London after all this summer.
Ultimately, the 29-year-old’s future has been subject of speculation for a while now given his contract situation, what with his current deal up in 12 months’ time, and while Spurs have a one-year extension they could trigger, doing so would bring a £25 million release clause into play.
And, undoubtedly, the Belgium international is worth much more than £25 million given his efforts for the North Londoners in the last few years, with Alderweireld playing a vital part in their run to third place in the division back in 2016, and indeed second place in 2017.
And given Pochettino’s men had the best defensive record in the top-flight in each of those campaigns, it’s clear how influential the 29-year-old was and still is to this Tottenham team, which is why many of our resident Spurs fans were concerned by the prospect of him leaving this summer.
However, reports that United, a side heavily linked with the defender in recent times, do not have him high on their wish-list will be music to the ears of Tottenham fans, with it arguable that chairman Daniel Levy has fended off the Red Devils as a result of the £70 million price-tag on Alderweireld’s shoulders.
Obviously, Spurs aren’t out of the woods yet, but United’s diminishing interest is definitely great news for the club, and were things to continue as they are and the longer Alderweireld remains at the North London outfit, it’s plausible that the likelihood of him penning a new deal increases.
Thus, with United’s interest seemingly not there, it’s feasible that the 29-year-old could well remain at Tottenham after all this summer.
