Fulham have always been a football club to splash a bit of cash, though it was not until last season of 2018-19 that they began spending big and signing top players. Up until last season, former French international, Steve Marlet, was the Cottagers highest ever transfer arrival, costing them a massive £15.84m back in 2001-02.
Though in the summer of 2018-19, Fulham went all out on three top players, spending over £70m, to keep their Premier League days alive. Ivorian central midfielder, Jean Michaël Seri, arrived from Ligue 1 side OGC Nice for a club-record fee of £27m. Along with Seri, followed another Ligue 1 young star named André Zambo Anguissa, from giants Marseille – for £22.37m. To complete this trio of £20m+ signings, Newcastle’s Aleksander Mitrovic joined the Whites for over £22m. Ivan Cavaleiro, and Bobby Reid also signed for a combined fee of £20m last summer, as well as Alfie Mawson who arrived from Swansea for £15m.
Despite Fulham’s best efforts to remain in the Premier League after spending over £100m, they were unfortunately relegated after finishing 19th with just 26 points.
With all this big money spending, you would expect Fulham to have sold plenty of players during the 2019-20 summer transfer window, but this is not the case. However, they did sell young 19-year-old Ryan Sessegnon to Tottenham Hotspur for a record £24.30m fee – the highest transfer in club history. The England U21 international caught the eye of many top Premier League clubs including Liverpool, though Spurs won the race to sign the versatile left-sided player.
This smashed the Cottagers’ previous transfer record set back in 2012-13 when Belgian international, Mousa Dembele left the club to join Tottenham for a notable £17m. Before that record was set, Louis Saha earnt Fulham £15.75m during the 2003-04 season, as Manchester United paid big money for the French international.
Steven Finnan was sold to Liverpool in 2003-04, and he went on to be one of the best right-backs in the Reds history, winning the Champions League final just one season after his arrival. Chris Smalling notably left Fulham at the young age of 20 to join Manchester United for a £7.20m fee, and Fulham legend, Clint Demsey made his move to Spurs in 2012-13 for upwards of £6m.
One of the greatest goalkeepers of all time, Edwin van der Sar, joined Manchester United from Fulham back in 2005, for a £3.60m fee, this was four years after the whites had signed him for almost £10m from Juventus. Get the latest Fulham transfer rumours here!
