The Newcastle fans in the Transfer Tavern have been reacting to their club’s Twitter post, appreciating their 29-year-old shot-stopper, Martin Dubravka. The Slovakian was brought into St James Park in January on-loan from Sparta Prague, despite the fans complaining that they didn’t need a ‘keeper.

Dubravka will likely be Rafa Benitez’s first permanent signing this summer as the man between the sticks has been one of the Geordies’ best players in the second half of the season. Benitez has masterminded wins over Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal in the latter stages of the season, with Dubravka playing a major role in that since his arrival and usurping of Karl Darlow and Rob Elliot.
Neither Darlow or Elliot had been able to convince their Spanish gaffer that they should be the club’s number one, leading to Benitez taking action in the January window. With the help of their on-loan ‘keeper, Newcastle marched on to a 10th placed finish and now they’ll be looking at kicking on next season and improving on their top-half finish as they hope to improve in summer and fight for a potential pace in Europe next season.
