Most Arsenal fans should already be vaguely familiar with the name of Neven Subotic as the 21-year-old Borussia Dortmund defender has been linked with a move to the Emirates for at least the past year.
Wenger’s desire the bring the centre back to North London remains strong as despite the recent acquisition of Laurent Koscielny from L’Orient, Arsenal remain distinctly light at the back.
Subotic spend the majority of his youth in the USA, whom he represented a youth level, before making his professional debut with Manze 05 in 2007 and then switching to Borussia Dortmund for £3.3m a year later. Premiership scouts took notice of his fierce tackling, aerial ability and strength whilst Subotic represented Serbia in South Africa and he is now being trailed by Arsenal, Man. Utd, Man. City and Chelsea.
The £25m price tag slapped on him by his German masters may prove to be something of an impediment to the two clubs who currently lead the race for his signature, however, as Wenger is notoriously frugal and is unlikely to blow the majority of his transfer kitty on one player whilst finances at Old Trafford are shrouded in uncertainty. If funds do in fact exist then the North West may well be his most likely destination as Ferguson looks to replace the want-away Nemanja Vidic.
