‘He’s really not that good’ - Tottenham fans on Twitter underwhelmed by attacker reports

The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern have been reacting to a story in The Independent that their 26-year-old Argentine, Erik Lamela, has a clause in his contract that the club are set to trigger keeping in N17 until at least 2020. Lamela’s current deal is set to expire next summer, although Spurs are keen to keep Lamela despite heavy interest from Portugal, Italy, Spain and France.

Many Spurs fans have sympathy for Lamela. The former Roma midfielder has had the majority of his career in North London marred by injury. In his time with Tottenham, he’s missed over 18 months of football with injuries to his hip and back, although now he looks fit and ready kick on and add more goals and assists to his game. Mauricio Pochettino seems to have plenty of faith in Lamela even as many fans expected his departure when the club made the move to sign PSG’s Lucas Moura in January.

If there’s one thing Lamela has done in his time with the Lilywhites, it’s win over the fans. Despite being born almost 7000 miles away from his current home, the winger understands what the big matches mean to the Spurs fans and never holds back. The Argentina international has received many a booking in a London derby for going into reckless challenges when the intensity has been high and never shirks responsibility with his immaculate work rate. The fans’ opinions on Lamela are divided though, as many believe he’s not up to the task at Spurs, considering the large fee that was forked out to bring him to North London.
