Homegrown: The 1 English player that could take Tottenham to the next level

The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern are eager for Mauricio Pochettino to bring in some new attacking talent. Fernando Llorente has not had the desired impact in London, and so beyond Harry Kane, the Lilywhites have very little choice.

This summer, then, signing a new striker makes perfect sense – and Spurs would struggle to do better than Englishman Jamie Vardy.

Vardy has been a consistently lethal goalscorer in the English top flight over the last few years, offering unrivalled quality going forward amongst many of his cohorts.

Naturally, he is most effective when facing goal. He’s got a fantastic shot on him, and that regularly leads to exciting goals, whilst he’s also very efficient – making him the perfect player to come in and do a job from the bench. Given that he would likely serve as the back-up to Harry Kane, that’s important. Elsewhere, he’s also very fast and technically gifted, making him arguably the complete forward.

Also, his time playing for Leicester City has also taught him how to win. He’s forced his way up the footballing pyramid, and so he certainly wouldn’t be intimidated by the prospect of a move for Spurs – not to mention he’s also experienced on an international level.

Granted, at 31-years-old, he isn’t the long-term option that Spurs would ideally land, but he’s shown no sign of slowing down over the last few years, and Tottenham could effectively guarantee that he will be able to do a job – such has been the nature of his recent success.

It’s a low-risk move for the Lilywhites, and it’s one that could help reduce the gap between them and Man City.
