Football is a serious business. Every week millions of football fans hope that their team wins and if they don’t the weekend’s all but ruined, while it’s not worth thinking about the amount of money that chairmen have invested in the fortunes of their clubs. However, without fail the beautiful game also manages to bring a smile to your face more often than not and football is littered with some extremely funny moments.
One man who has brought many of these to the Premier League this season is Blackpool manager Ian Holloway. The Tangerines’ boss is renowned for his post-match interviews and his take on an ‘ugly’ win against Chesterfield is certainly novel: “To put it in gentleman’s terms if you’ve been out for a night and you’re looking for a young lady and you pull one, some weeks they’re good looking and some weeks they’re not the best. Our performance today would have been not the best looking bird but at least we got her in the taxi. She weren’t the best looking lady we ended up taking home but she was very pleasant and very nice, so thanks very much, let’s have a coffee.”
While Ian Holloway is football manager first, funny man second, there are of course those who make a living out of being funny. Two of Britain’s finest comedians are Jimmy Carr and Al Murray, with the latter’s Pub Landlord character no doubt helping to drown the sorrows of many distraught football fans. Carr and Murray have teamed up with Walkers and are taking part in their ‘Clash of the Comics’ campaign as they look to raise money for Red Nose Day 2011…
Jimmy Carr is representing Jimmy con Carrne, while Al Murray is championing Steak and Al Pie, something plenty of football fans enjoy eating during the half-time break, but we want to know what the funniest moment you’ve ever seen on a football pitch has been. I’m talking ridiculous own goals, shocking misses and memorable celebrations with a twist. A leading contributor to these is bound to be Jimmy Bullard. Apart from doing a dodgy shampoo advert, Jimmy is known for his enthusiasm for football and his goal celebration that replicated then Hull City manager Phil Brown’s infamous on-pitch team talk showed he wasn’t afraid to take the Mickey! The way referee Paul Alcock tumbled over after Paolo Di Canio pushed him also brought a smile to many fans’ faces, but we shouldn’t laugh at that should we? Alright, you’re allowed a quiet snigger!
