The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern have been locked in debate over the last few days as they look to source a solution to their side’s problems. They’ve really struggled over the last few weeks in the Premier League, and a draw with Watford over the weekend has made their problems even worse.
Clearly, then, Mauricio Pochettino has some big decisions to make as he looks to turn his team around, and one player that should undoubtedly be in with a chance of featuring in Tottenham’s next game is Erik Lamela. The Argentine has just returned to action after a long-term injury layoff, and he has looked good.
He’s already assisted Tottenham’s main man Harry Kane up-front, and with his match sharpness quickly coming back, the Argentine is clearly ready to make the next step. Tottenham’s game against APOEL could be the perfect opportunity.
Contextually, the game doesn’t hold much significance for the Lilywhites. They’re already through to the next stage and are set to finish in top spot, meaning that Pochettino can afford to experiment. What’s more, given the lack of significance on the game, Lamela can take the game in his stride and not push himself too much, allowing him to ease his way back into the fold.
In terms of what he can provide on the pitch, he could be just what Tottenham need. They’ve lacked that offensive flair in recent weeks that was frequent last term. That energy, that pace, that extra quality in front of goal, and they’re three qualities that Lamela brings in droves. With players like Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen struggling, the Argentine could be the perfect player to come in and freshen things up.
After a few weeks of mediocrity in the attack, Lamela could be the player needed to really improve this team – agreed?
