If there’s one title challenger this season that needs to strengthen arguably more than any other in the upcoming January transfer window, it surely must be Tottenham.
Certainly, that is an assessment our local Lilywhites fans here in the Transfer Tavern agree with as they are not sure they currently have the strength in depth to keep up with the likes of Chelsea this year.
When Harry Kane was injured earlier in the campaign, for example, the men from White Hart Lane really started to struggle and if that happens again this season our landlord thinks they can say goodbye to their title chances.
He thinks too, then, that Spurs need reinforcements but is also of the impression that the club will need to get rid of players before they can bring some in.
It’s a case of balancing the books, then, and so here are the two Spurs players he thinks Mauricio Pochettino will need to sell in January…
Tom Carroll

Carroll was meant to be Spurs’ next top midfielder but at the age of 24 he looks set to miss out on being just that.
With the likes of Mousa Dembele, Victor Wanyama, Eric Dier, Dele Alli and Harry Winks all ahead of him in the pecking order at the club it really could be time for him to move on for the good of his career. He could be a decent player somewhere else, though, so all is not lost.
Kevin Wimmer

Wimmer has played more this season than he has been used to thanks to the injury of Toby Alderweireld but even then, he found it hard to keep his place nailed down.
With Eric Dier showing he is adept in that centre half role and the likes of young Cameron Carter-Vickers coming through it could be time for Wimmer to be offloaded and play somewhere else. A shame, but it’s a decision that needs to be taken.
