What a dire season it has been for Sunderland so far this year.
The Black Cats lost Sam Allardyce to England, needlessly as it turned out, in the summer before David Moyes was appointed with very little time to buy the players he wanted before the summer window shut.
Our resident Black Cats fans here in the Transfer Tavern were still relatively happy with his appointment though and felt he would still do the job required, but has that not come about so far.
Sunderland are yet to win in ten Premier League games, the joint worst since the top-flight was rebranded and they are a staggering eight points from safety already in lying bottom of the pile.
Clearly, then, some serious work needs to be done to the squad if they are to stay up and our landlord thinks a serious clear-out is needed.
Here, then, are the THREE players that should be got rid of…
Vito Mannone
Jordan Pickford looks like he’ll be a top stopper and is rightly Sunderland’s number one but with Mannone at number two they don’t look prepared.
He wasn’t much good at Arsenal and if Pickford was to get injured it’d be highly unlikely Mannone could do a decent job.
Sunderland need to get a good back-up, at least, in and they need to do it as soon as possible.
Papy Djilobodji
Djilobodji, put simply, just isn’t that good.
He’s one of those players that you wonder how he’s got a move to a Premier League club and it seems that Sunderland have made too many of those kinds of signings over the years to the point where they just need to clear them all out.
David Moyes wants a sturdy back four but he’ll be getting none of that if Djilobodji sticks around for much longer than the next transfer window.
Sebastian Larsson
Larsson has a great right foot on him but his legs are pretty much gone and so it could be time for him to move on.
He was never the quickest player anyway and right now the Black Cats need combative, energetic midfielders to get them out of this problem and that isn’t Larsson’s game.
He’s scored some memorable goals for the club which will always been looked on fondly but it must be time for him to move on.
