With all due respect to Newcastle, Wolves were expected to take home the three points on Monday night to continue their excellent run of form in 2019.
However, thanks to some excellent performances from the likes of Sean Longstaff, Fabian Schar, Jamaal Lascelles, Matt Richie, and Salomon Rondon, they were held until the very last with Willy Boly rescuing a point through a 90+5 minute equaliser.
There were pockets of excitement for the home fans, predictably coming from the likes of Raul Jimenez and Diogo Jota, who combined on a couple of occasions to create goalscoring opportunities, to no avail.
Most memorably, a diabolical headed effort from Mexican forward Jimenez in the final minutes of the game, which somehow found its way ambling 10 yards off target from just outside the goalmouth.
Other than that, there’s very little that can be said about the offensive and creative units of Wolverhampton Wanderers, who looked uncharacteristically blunt in their opponent’s half. Defensively speaking, there were some decent performances from Jonny and Matt Doherty, with the former collecting our unsung hero for the day.
Tireless on the left-hand side, the Spaniard, who has recently made his move from Athletico Madrid, permanent, showed exactly why the club were willing to part with their cash. On more than one occasion he dispossessed the opposition to help build an attack and was just about the only player who managed to combine industriousness with quality on the day.
There’s no doubt that the visitors will be the more disappointed of the two teams following their valiant efforts, with a point only doing enough to keep them in 16th position, floating just above the relegation zone.
