Jose Mourinho to Tottenham: Financial stat doesn’t bode well for imminent transfer windows

Tottenham have appointed Jose Mourinho to replace Mauricio Pochettino after over five years with the club.

Pochettino oversaw one of the most successful periods in Spurs’ recent history, guiding the club to multiple top-four finishes, as well as the Champions League final in June.

He leaves the club with them languishing 14th in the Premier League, 11 points adrift of fourth-placed Manchester City.

During his time at the club, the Argentinian was a master of getting the best out of what he had, not necessarily splashing out in the transfer window.

The development of Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Harry Winks and a host of other shoestring purchases and academy players has underpinned his time at the club. Indeed, that management style is a stark contrast to his replacement; Mourinho broke the English transfer record while at Manchester United to sign Paul Pogba from Juventus for a then world-record fee.

With that in mind, an extraordinary stat emerged from journalist Daniel Storey when the former Chelsea boss replaced Pochettino, regarding their respective net spends.

Mauricio Pochettino had a net spend of £109m over five-and-a-half years at Tottenham. Jose Mourinho almost matched that over a 12-week period in 2018. Extraordinary gamble from Daniel Levy.

That is a a truly mind-blowing disparity, and time will tell if Mourinho can work his magic on a potentially tighter budget than he is used to.
