Mauricio Pochettino has been sacked as Tottenham manager after five years at the helm in North London.

Despite reaching the Champions League final last season, a run of 25 points from 24 league games, as well as crushing defeats in the Champions League and Carabao Cup led to Daniel Levy pulling the trigger on arguably his most successful ever manager.
It took the club just under 11 hours from announcing Pochettino’s departure to announce the hiring of new manager Jose Mourinho on their official website.
It’s his first return to management since being dismissed by Manchester United in December 2018; the 56-year-old won the Premier League three times with London rivals Chelsea.
Mourinho is one of the managerial greats, meaning he commands a hefty salary, as Levy found out when he appointed the Portuguese.
Indeed, Daily Mail journalist Matt Barlow reported on Twitter that his contract will be worth more than Pochettino’s, which was worth £8.5 million a year.
Jose will be on the usual Jose-sized contract it seems. Rather than Poch’s piffling £8.5m per year. Deal closed last night by Pini Zahavi who first brought him to Chelsea in 2004.

The fact that Levy is willing to spend big money to bring Mourinho to Tottenham would suggest he’s desperate for instant success. With the Spurs owner a notoriously careful spender, it seems the CV the Portuguese boasts of fairly instantly enjoying success at his employers has been enough to tempt him away from big money.
Mourinho, despite being sacked by Manchester United and Chelsea since leaving Real Madrid in 2013, has won 9 trophies (per the Sun) across five different clubs during his first campaign in charge. While we’re some way into this campaign now, if he can replicate that success by way of qualifying for the Champions League and ensuring the riches that come with that are available to Spurs next season, it’s hard to argue against Levy’s decision.
