The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern are struggling to get over their side’s loss to Juventus. Optimism was sky high ahead of the game, owing to their fantastic performance in the first-leg, but in the second-half, everything came crumbling down.
A two-minute lapse in concentration from Spurs, in the end, closed the door on their Champions League hopes – and that’s hugely dissapointing for the club. The ramifications of the game are yet to be seen, but Bleacher Report journalist Dean Jones has offered a worrying prediction about what could lie ahead for one of the Lilywhites’ most important players.
The good news for Spurs is that the new stadium adds incentive for players to stay for the next phase. I think Poch and Kane see it through, not so sure about someone like Dembele if one of the Spanish giants come knocking
— Dean Jones (@DeanJonesSoccer) March 8, 2018
Dembele has, of course, been one of Tottenham’s best players this term, and he was the star of the show in the first-leg against Juventus. Controlling the midfield with his incredible ball retention and technical skill, the Lilywhites might have been down and out after the first tie without him.
The same can be said for their Premier League campaign, given that their improved displays have moved in unison with Dembele’s return to form.
A player of his quality will want to win trophies and play in the best competitions, and Tottenham’s European exit suggests that the North London team aren’t quite at that level yet.
Losing him would, undoubtedly, come as a huge blow to Spurs, and whilst there is not yet any suggestion that a bid is coming, Jones’ prediction makes for bleak reading for Spurs fans.
Landlord’s Verdict
Dembele may now be in his 30s, but he is still every bit as important as ever for Tottenham.
Particularly on big European nights, he’s exactly the sort of player that top teams need, and so it would be a huge loss for Spurs if he were to leave.
As already mentioned, whether Madrid or Barcelona are keen remains to be seen, but they certainly won’t have missed his fine display against the Italian giants.
Tottenham will be hoping that they can hold on to him for as long as possible.
