Chelsea came remarkably close to completing a major deadline-day signing this summer, only for the proposed move to collapse at the final moment.
The Blues were left frustrated by the situation, but the player involved has now offered an intriguing hint that the door to Stamford Bridge may not be completely closed.
Chelsea Target Has “Turned the Page”
Chelsea target Lamine Camara has suggested he is putting his failed move to Stamford Bridge behind him, although his latest comments could leave the door open to a future transfer.
A £47 million deal had reportedly been agreed verbally between Chelsea and Monaco for the Senegal international during the final hours of the summer window.
However, Monaco ultimately pulled out of the agreement, leaving Camara in France and Chelsea without the midfielder they had been hoping to bring in.
Speaking to French media, per Sky Sports, Camara acknowledged that a departure had been possible but insisted he is now concentrating on his football with Monaco.
“There was a possibility I could leave,” Camara said. “It didn’t go through at the last minute and that’s part of football. I’ve turned the page and am focusing on the season.”
The breakdown reportedly came amid uncertainty surrounding Folarin Balogun’s proposed move from Monaco to Everton. Chelsea had been attempting to strengthen their midfield after allowing Enzo Fernandez to join Manchester City for £125 million.
Camara had even completed a medical as Chelsea attempted to finalise the deal, but Monaco ultimately reversed their position.
Camara leaves door open for future move
Despite insisting that he has moved on from the failed transfer, Camara’s latest comments appear to leave some uncertainty over what could happen further down the line.
The 22-year-old started Monaco’s 1-1 draw against Strasbourg on Saturday and remains focused on helping his current club, but he did not completely rule out another opportunity arriving in the future.
“I can help the team a lot,” Camara said. “Football moves fast. Maybe other opportunities will come along. But for now, I’m staying focused on the season with Monaco.”
The wording could be significant for Chelsea, particularly given their continued need for midfield reinforcements.
Camara has made six appearances this season and scored once, while Monaco have made an excellent start to the Ligue 1 campaign.
Chelsea, meanwhile, have looked short in midfield following Fernandez’s departure, with Moises Caicedo still working his way back from injury.
With Camara seemingly happy to focus on Monaco for now, Chelsea may have to wait and see whether another opportunity emerges in the future.
