Leeds u-turn back towards Steven Gerrard

Leeds United could reportedly make Steven Gerrard their next manager in another ‘twist’ at Elland Road, according to Football Insider’s Wayne Veysey.

The Lowdown: Skubala in charge at Leeds

The Whites suffered a damaging 1-0 defeat away to Premier League relegation rivals Everton on Saturday afternoon, as the battle to say up intensifies.

Michael Skubala is currently in charge of Leeds in a caretaker role, and reports have have suggested he could stay on until the end of the season.

However, a fresh update has emerged on the search to find Jesse Marsch’s successor, and it appears there’s yet more chopping and changing from Victor Orta and Andrea Radrizzani.

The Latest: Back to Gerrard

According to Football Insider’s Veysey, Gerrard has re-emerged as a potential candidate to become Leeds’ new manager, having been sacked as Aston Villa boss back in October.

Radrizzani apparently hoped Skubala could take charge until the end of the season, but is now plotting a u-turn ‘amid fears that the club will head back into the Championship if they can’t secure a proven manager in the coming weeks’.

The report states that the Liverpool legend and his assistant Gary McAllister could take charge until the end of the season, with the club then assessing matters for the long-term at that point.

The Verdict: Would be a big risk

It is essential that Leeds get their next appointment spot on, with a return to the Championship acting as such a massive blow to the club’s plans under planned new owners 49ers Enterprises.

Bringing in Gerrard would be an undoubted risk, considering the 42-year-old flattered to deceive at Villa, mustering an average of just 1.18 points per game across 40 matches in charge and only 0.82 per outing this term.

There is no doubt that he was a truly great footballer but certainly doesn’t mean he will become an elite manager and there would be trepidation if he became Leeds boss.

Only bringing him in until the summer does make it less of risk, in fairness, and he did win the Scottish Premiership title with Rangers, but the risk element is clear.
