Leeds: Journalist reacts to Wilfried Gnonto deal -Leeds United News

Journalist David Anderson has been reacting to Leeds United’s move for Wilfried Gnonto over the past 24 hours.

The Lowdown: Dramatic deadline day

Victor Orta was an extremely busy man on deadline day, looking to land a new forward following Rodrigo’s injury earlier in the week.

The Leeds chief tried and failed to sign Cody Gakpo and Bamba Dieng, eventually turning back to long-time target Gnonto from FC Zurich.

The 18-year-old has penned a five-year deal at Elland Road and has reportedly cost in the region of £4m.

The Latest: Anderson reacts

Taking to Twitter on Friday morning, Anderson described it as a ‘bonkers deadline day’ for Leeds.

He believes they’ve come out of it well though, claiming the capture of Gnonto for a ‘reduced fee’ could ‘prove to be a great bit of business’ by Orta and co.

Happy with Leeds' summer business?

Yes, just about!

Yes, just about!

Not really!

Not really!

The Verdict: Could be true…

Gnonto actually has more first-team experience than Dieng, is a full Italy international and is four years younger, so Anderson could be right when saying it may end up being a smart signing.

He also cost less than a proposed €10m deal for Dieng, and his arrival could place Joe Gelhardt further up the pecking order under Jesse Marsch.

Gnonto could have his part to play over the coming weeks too due to Rodrigo’s injury, even though Marsch stated earlier this month that he isn’t Premier League ready at this moment in time.
