Former Leeds United defender Dominic Matteo has heaped praise on winger Ian Poveda after his second half performance against Manchester City at the weekend.
The Yorkshire club have been excellent thus far in the Premier League, returning to England’s top flight after sealing automatic promotion from the Championship last term.
A string of impressive results after the opening day 4-3 defeat to Liverpool has seen Marcelo Bielsa’s side go on an unbeaten run since that narrow loss.
Good performances have seen a number of Whites players standout, including young English-born winger Poveda, who made a good impression when called upon against Pep Guardiola’s Man City at the weekend, gaining himself a 6.72 out of ten rating for his 45 minute showing.
Poveda’s point to prove against former club Man City
After spending three years with Man City’s academy, Poveda spent six months with the Citizens first-team before moving to Elland Road during the January transfer window.
Coming on from the bench, the 20-year-old proved to be a problem for experienced French defender Benjamin Mendy, forcing Guardiola to substitute him and replace him with Nathan Ake.
Discussing the youngster’s performance against City in his Yorkshire Evening Post column, former Leeds man Matteo said: “Ian Poveda was a catalyst for me when he came on at half-time for Alioski.
“He’s such an exciting player and one to keep an eye on.”
Will Poveda be given time after Raphinha signing?
Certainly, from what we have seen from Poveda thus far in the Premier League, the youngster should be afforded further game time.
However, the £17m signing of Raphinha from Ligue 1 side Rennes on deadline day will very much test Marcelo Bielsa’s liking and trust of the youngster.
A plus for Bielsa in having Poveda playing well and Raphinha knocking on the door for a debut is that both Jack Harrison and Helder Costa, the usual wingers for Leeds, will now have to further impress on the pitch, knowing full well that they are not guarenteed a place in the side.
