Leeds United were without young goalkeeper Illan Meslier for the Premier League match against Brighton. However, a video posted on social media shows that he is back in training and getting prepared for the Newcastle match.
The latest on Meslier
The goalkeeper did not miss the Brighton match due to an injury, but because of an illness. However, it seems like he has fully recovered.
A recent video shows Meslier being put through some training drills and it was posted on Twitter by Leeds goalkeeping coach Marcos Abad. This could that he has recovered and should be fit to play against the Magpies.
This is great news for Leeds
Journalist Phil Hay recently discussed the Frenchman following a poor performance against Tottenham Hotspur as he said: “Leeds United’s risk vs reward mindset is reflected by their faith in Illan Meslier – a goalkeeper with huge potential but who is incredibly young by Premier League standards.”
Marcelo Bielsa clearly sees Meslier as his number one choice and he has had a fairly decent season, managing to make 67 saves (Premier League). He has featured 17 times and has kept six clean sheets (Transfermarkt), whilst helping Leeds currently sit 12th in the division (SofaScore).
However, there have definitely been some inconsistencies and he has frustrated fans on occasions. Furthermore, Leeds have conceded 33 goals – this is the second-most in the division. (SofaScore). However, Meslier is their first-choice goalkeeper, so to have him back is a huge boost.
This expected return is great news for Leeds and should give the club a much-needed morale boost as they are yet to score or win a game in 2021.
