Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has predicted that summer signing Raphinha will become a regular start in the coming weeks for the Yorkshire club.
Arriving at Elland Road as Marcelo Bielsa’s deadline day signing, the Brazilian winger cost the newly promoted Premier League side £16.72m from Ligue 1 side Rennes in a move that increased the club’s summer spending close to the £100m mark.
The 23-year-old’s arrival saw the Argentine coach add to his attacking options with the forward having shown his worth last season in the French top-flight, scoring five goals and supplying three assists in 22 appearances.
Leeds, who have started the season well, losing just one of their opening four games, face a tricky league test on Monday evening against Wolves and former striker Whelan believes the new signing could feature.
What are Whelan’s feelings on Raphinha’s chances of starting in the coming weeks for Leeds?
Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan said: “He’s a great signing, it’s good news, how long have we seen record signings sit on the bench or not be involved at times?
“I think the good thing is we signed him before the international break, helped him get up to speed with the training methods and everything required from Marcelo Bielsa.
“I think that’s helped him that we brought him in before the international break or else we wouldn’t have seen him straight away in a Leeds United shirt. He’s a great addition, I very much doubt he’ll start the game but he’ll be a great option off the bench.”
Will Raphinha prove he is worth what he cost Leeds?
If the lively winger can replicate his statistics for Rennes last term, Marcelo Bielsa could have a very exciting talent on his hands.
The Brazilian will provide strong competition for the likes of Jack Harrison, Helder Costa and the emerging talent of Ian Poveda on the flanks at Leeds and Bielsa can be very confident in his options in those attacking areas.
Will the Brazilian be worth the money paid for him? Of course, that will be judged on his impact and how Leeds get on this season…
