The defensive midfielder, who has now embedded himself in Gareth Southgate’s England side, played a large part in the Whites’ promotion to the Premier League last season, starting 37 games in their Championship-winning campaign.
With Phillips’ rise in English football, the Daily Mirror has recently discussed interest shown in him by Liverpool and Spurs, with the latter heavily linked as Daniel Levy is reportedly considering a contract offer to double the player’s current salary.
What has Whelan said about Spurs’ interest in Kalvin Phillips?
“Look, Leeds do not need to sell him,” former Leeds man Whelan told Football Insider. “That is the way it is.
“We are not a selling club anymore. We are in the Premier League and if we are going to be successful and hit the heights that we hope to, it is imperative that we keep Kalvin Phillips.
“Speculation will happen and I know money talks but Kalvin is a Leeds lad who pledged his contract to the club by signing a new contract.
“To get him away from Leeds right now would take an astronomical figure. Otherwise Leeds would not even contemplate the idea of selling him next summer.”
