Life after Baines: Everton would be stupid not to consider £13.5m-rated ace as replacement

Everton fans in the Transfer Tavern are eager to see who Marco Silva will bring to the club now the summer transfer window is open.

Silva will surely sit down with new director of football, Marcel Brands, to identify the signings that Everton need to make in order to challenge for Europe next season. The Toffees struggled immensely last season but ended the season in eighth. Our punters are hoping this transfer window will be a significant improvement on last summer’s.

Left-back will be an area of concern for both Silva and Brands. First-choice defender Leighton Baines is approaching the end of his career, and his performances are starting to decline. He can no longer keep up with the demands of a gruelling Premier League season. Back-up option, Cuco Martina, is not good enough to start.

Therefore, Everton need to raid the Bundesliga to sign Hertha Berlin defender – Marvin Plattenhardt. Valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt, he made 33 appearances in the Bundesliga last season and picked up seven assists for his team-mates. His performances earned him a space in Germany’s World Cup squad.

Plattenhardt has established himself as one of the best left-backs in the division. He is solid defensively and good going forward. The German is also a significant danger from set-pieces. The 26-year-old is approaching his prime and is well-suited to Premier League football.

He is the perfect replacement for Baines.
