Everton: Sky Sports reveal Jonathan David interest

Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg has revealed that Everton are ‘very interested’ in signing LOSC Lille striker Jonathan David in 2023.

The Lowdown: Firepower needed

The Goodison Park outfit have only managed to score a total of eight goals in the Premier League so far this season, the fourth fewest in the division.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s injuries and subsequent unavailability at the start of the campaign have obviously not helped, but the Merseyside club need to rely less on his fitness going forward, and so could look to bring in a new big-money striker in 2023.

The Latest: David interest

Taking to Twitter, Plettenberg has revealed that Frank Lampard’s team are ‘very interested’ in signing David in 2023, although he is thought to want to join a top club in Europe, and would cost more than €50m (£43.6m):

“News Jonathan David: Been told that Everton was very interested in a transfer in 2023 but there was no concrete offer! No option for the 22 y/o striker anyway. He wants to join a Top12 club in Europe. Contract until 2025, NO release clause. Price: More than €50m!”

The Verdict: Unlikely?

As much as David would be a top signing for the Toffees, it just seems very unlikely at this stage.

Hailed as a ‘phenomenal‘ player by football podcaster and commentator Maximiliano Bretos after helping Canada qualify for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the 22-year-old has also impressed at club level with Lille, having scored nine goals in 11 games in Ligue 1 already this term.

He has reached double figures for goals in the division in each of his last two seasons (Transfermarkt), starting to display the consistency required at the top level from a young player.

Likened to Liverpool and Premier League superstar Mohamed Salah for his ability to score from different areas of the pitch, David would no doubt light up the top flight, but given that the Blues cannot offer him any form of European football, they are likely to be out of the running for his signature come next year.
