Liverpool will end the season without silverware after their Premier League title hopes were officially extinguished this weekend.
Arsenal’s victory over Newcastle United on Saturday evening sealed the Reds’ fate, coming just two days short of the one-year anniversary of their title triumph last season.
It has been a challenging 12 months for the Merseyside club.
Despite a significant spending spree last summer, Liverpool have been unable to maintain the standards that defined their previous campaign.
The upcoming transfer window now presents a crucial opportunity for Arne Slot and the club’s hierarchy to assess both the squad and their wider strategy, as they look to address a clear drop-off in performance and standards.
Injuries have disrupted the squad throughout the season, while the potential departures of key players like Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson have only added to the uncertainty surrounding the club’s immediate future.
A single underwhelming campaign may be tolerated by the Anfield faithful, but there is now a growing expectation for a clear rebuild, one built on smarter recruitment and a refreshed tactical approach.
That process may already be underway.
Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Liverpool saw a January bid rejected for Inter right-back Denzel Dumfries, and could return with renewed interest this summer.
“One team to keep an eye on Denzel Dumfries remains Liverpool. Liverpool already wanted him during the January transfer window. It wasn’t possible, partly because Dumfries was injured.
“Inter wouldn’t have agreed to a loan deal in January, which was perhaps the only reason why Liverpool could even consider that kind of move, but Inter immediately said no.
“Let’s see whether this summer Liverpool go back in for Dumfries. He’s certainly a player highly rated by the manager, Arne Slot. There’s a very good feeling there, but it remains to be seen whether Liverpool will choose Dumfries as their main priority target or not.”
Should Liverpool sign Denzel Dumfries?

Liverpool have struggled to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold following his high-profile move to Real Madrid.
The academy graduate was crucial to Liverpool’s attacking structure, and his absence has been obvious on the right flank, with Mohamed Salah lacking the same level of support he once thrived on.
Ironically, Liverpool’s recent signing Jeremie Frimpong is set to compete directly with Dumfries for the Netherlands at this summer’s World Cup, and he could be competing at club level soon too.
Dumfries already shares strong connections with several Liverpool players, including Frimpong, Cody Gakpo and captain Virgil van Dijk, relationships that could ease any potential transition.
It is no surprise that Slot is keen on the Dutch defender; his style aligns closely with the tactical profile the Liverpool manager is familiar with, offering both physicality and attacking intent from a wide position.
The 30-year-old Inter star – once described as “breathless” by BBC Sport pundit Micah Richards – may fall outside Liverpool’s typical age profile, but he brings valuable experience at an elite level.
He also has form for his attacking threat alongside his defensive presence, contributing seven goals and four assists in 35 appearances, making him an ideal asset for Liverpool.
While his age may raise questions from a long-term perspective, a reported £22m release clause presents Dumfries as a relatively low-risk solution, one capable of addressing a clear weakness in the short to medium term.
