Transfer insider Graeme Bailey has claimed on Twitter (via @GraemeBailey) that Liverpool are ‘keeping an eye’ on Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale, drawing incredulity from many Reds supporters.
According to the journalist, the 31-year-old is open to the idea of returning to the Premier League, with the Merseysiders and Manchester United believed to be keeping an eye on the situation. However, as per The Telegraph, Bale’s former club Tottenham are heavily linked with the player, whose club are willing to fund half of his wages in order to offload him.
Gareth Bale open to idea of returning to Premier League this summer…with Real Madrid ready to fund big portion of wages. Daniel Levy told Jose Mourinho in November, when he arrived, that he could have him. Man United and even Liverpool keeping an eye on the situation…

The Wales international, who scored twice against the Reds in the 2018 Champions League final and has won that competition four times, currently earns £350,000-a-week at the Bernabeu, nearly twice the take-home pay of Liverpool’s highest earner Mohamed Salah, who is on £200,000 per week (as per Spotrac).
The Anfield club are currently not in a powerful financial position, with their hopes of signing Thiago Alcantara seemingly dependent on them offloading players in order to fund a transfer. Also, The Mirror reported that the Reds were the worst-hit Premier League club in financial terms from earnings lost due to the global pandemic.

Indeed, there has been only one new addition to Jurgen Klopp’s squad so far this summer in the form of Kostas Tsimikas, while the Merseysiders have spent little more than £20m on new signings since the start of the summer 2019 transfer window (as per TransferMarkt).
These Liverpool fans on Twitter duly baulked at any possibility of the club being able to fund a move for Bale in the circumstances:
Madrid paying half his wages so we’d pay £300k with no signing fee 🤔. That would be incredible but I just can’t see it happening.

That’s definitely not true and even if it was I wouldn’t want him

We literally have not looked at it once 👍
We can’t even afford the flight to get him over here

They can’t sign Thiago, so what are they keeping and eye on Bale for.

Keeping an eye as he flies over Liverpool to land in London….not a hope

If there is one thing we good at, its keeping an eye on players. We are a scouting system for other clubs
