Liverpool are closing in on a deal with Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal to sell striker Darwin Nunez. ESPN has reported that the deal has not yet been finalised between the clubs, with negotiations ongoing and all parties confident of striking a deal.
The transfer fee is understood to be in the region of €53 million, as Liverpool recoup a large portion of the initial £64m they paid for him. Nunez joined Liverpool from Benfica in 2022 on the back of a high flying season where he scored 26 goals in 28 Liga Portugal games.
His time at Liverpool has been less fruitful though. He’s scored nine, eleven, and five goals in his three seasons in the Premier League. He scored seven goals in all competitions last season, as speculation about his long term future at the club started to intensify.
While he has managed a commendable total of 40 goals across 143 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool, his time at the club has been marred by inconsistency and high profile misses.
Nunez set for Liverpool departure
Nunez remains a polarizing figure amongst the Anfield faithful. His pace and athletic ability makes him a handful for defenders and his link up play has seen him add a fair bit of assists to his account.
The lack of consistency in front of goal has ultimately seen his stock fall though, and he now looks set for a new chapter. Nunez’s exit would mark another significant shift for Liverpool’s front line ahead of next season, following the departure of Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich.
Federico Chiesa has also been linked with a move away from Anfield, while the Reds have added French starlet Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt. With another slot to fill in the forward positions, the name on many Liverpool supporters lips will be Alexander Isak.
Liverpool are long term admirers of the Newcastle striker and were in for the player even before signing Ekitike and selling Diaz. The Reds made an informal enquiry for Isak earlier in the summer, before submitting an official bid in early August of £110m plus add-ons.
The bid was rejected outright by Newcastle who value the player at £150m.
