Luke Garbutt was one of the jewels in Everton’s crown a few years ago, and the Everton fans in the Tavern expected him to go all the way.
However, with such a quality Everton squad ahead of him, a loan move was the only option – and he has progressively built his way up the leagues in the years he has spent away from the club.
He currently finds himself at Wigan as part of his 4th loan spell, and for the first time – he has opened up about his prospects at Everton.
Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, he said: “I’ve got a long-term contract at Everton” before adding “but if that doesn’t work out…then I can get a transfer somewhere else”.
Garett’s perspective is refreshing, as it seems clear that all he wants to do is play his football. He isn’t interested in the glory or the money; he just wants to play.
The Everton fans in the Tavern will be hoping that he gets his chance at Everton, as they all had very high hopes for him a few years ago.
It will certainly be difficult, though, with top players including Leighton Baines ahead of the youngster in the pecking order at Everton.
His career may have stalled somewhat, but our landlord still believes that there is a great player in there somewhere – and Garbutt has the potential to make it on the big stage!
