Everton supporters in the Transfer Tavern are very much looking forward to the new era at their football club following the appointment of Marco Silva as the new Toffees manager last month.
The 40-year-old has been out of a job since being sacked as Watford boss back in January, with the Hornets very much blaming Everton for their approaches for the Portuguese after their decision to sack Ronald Koeman. Regardless, the Merseysiders now have their man after relieving Sam Allardyce of his duties at the end of the season, this all despite leading the club to an eighth place finish in the Premier League.
Nonetheless, there are many expectant and excited Evertonians in the Tavern at present, several of whom are likely to be intrigued by recent reports suggesting that Manchester United may not pursue their interest in Tottenham’s Danny Rose.
Thus, with a move to United unlikely, Silva’s Everton must now take advantage by sealing a deal for the £27 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt), as he’d undoubtedly be the ideal long-term replacement for the ageing Leighton Baines.
Ultimately, 33-year-old Baines has been an outstanding servant to the Toffees since his move from Wigan Athletic back in 2007, with the 30-capped England international going on to appear over 400 times for the Merseysiders, scoring 38 goals and laying on 66 assists in the process.
However, his spell on the sidelines this term gave the Toffees faithful a glimpse of what things will look like after Baines’ departure, and it’s fair to say that the current left back options at Goodison Park simply aren’t good enough to fill the Englishman’s shoes.
Yet there is no doubt that Spurs’ Rose would be the perfect replacement, as the 27-year-old has proven to be one of the best left backs in the Premier League in the last few years.
The England international, who will turn out for his country at this summer’s World Cup in Russia, struggled somewhat to regularly dispose of Ben Davies as Mauricio Pochettino’s number one left back this term, what with injuries and a lack of form resulting in just 17 appearances for Rose.
However, when fully fit and in form, there aren’t many better left backs, or indeed wing backs, in the Premier League than the 27-year-old, whose future at Tottenham has been in doubt ever since an interview he did with The Sun last summer questioning and ultimately criticising their transfer policy.
As such, it has looked increasingly inevitable as the season has worn on that Rose would leave this summer, with United and indeed Everton two sides reportedly keen on the left back in a bid to solve their own issues in that position.
And with United seemingly cooling their interest in the defender, Silva’s Everton must now take advantage to make the sort of signing that would send out a huge statement of intent to the Premier League’s top six, at the same time providing the club with their ideal Baines replacement.
