Manchester United have enjoyed an impressive resurgence under Michael Carrick.
Despite a recent defeat to Newcastle United, the Red Devils have otherwise been in strong form since the interim boss took charge.
United currently sit third in the Premier League and look well on course to secure Champions League football — something that appeared highly unlikely during the final months of Ruben Amorim’s tenure.
Even with performances improving on the pitch, a major squad overhaul is expected in the summer. Both arrivals and departures are likely as the club reshapes the squad ahead of next season.
However, United have now been dealt a significant setback in their efforts to offload one player.
Trabzonspor Not Ready to Pay for Onana
Manchester United have reportedly been informed that Trabzonspor are unwilling to meet the club’s asking price for Andre Onana this summer.
The Cameroon international joined United from Inter Milan in July 2023 for £43.8 million, with an additional £3.4 million included in potential add-ons tied to performance and success.
However, a series of inconsistent displays and several high-profile mistakes led to growing criticism of the goalkeeper. Former United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel even labelled him a “problem”, as the club began looking for alternative options between the posts.
That search resulted in the arrival of Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp for around £18 million, a move that ultimately paved the way for Onana to join Trabzonspor on loan for the remainder of the season.
While the 29-year-old has made 21 appearances for the Turkish side, the club are not prepared to match United’s valuation, which is believed to sit between £40 million and £43 million.
Trabzonspor vice-president Zeyyat Kafkas confirmed the club’s stance while speaking to Gunebakıs.
“As the figure from Manchester United for the purchase of Andre Onana is in the range of €45-50m, our president has sincerely informed the community in line with Trabzonspor’s realities.”
He added: “However, if the conditions change, the situation changes.”
United had hoped that Onana’s loan spell would help secure a permanent transfer this summer, but Trabzonspor’s reluctance to meet the asking price now complicates those plans.
Unless another club enters the race or the valuation drops, the goalkeeper’s future at Old Trafford could remain uncertain heading into the next transfer window.
