After signing for Manchester City in 2008, cult hero Benjani had somewhat of a mixed Sky Blues career – but there is one moment he will always be remembered for; that Manchester derby celebration at Old Trafford.
Speaking in an exclusive with the Athletic, apparently conducted at the Travelodge in Salford Quays, the Zimbabwean opened up over his City career and what prompted that iconic celebration during the Sky Blues’ 2-1 win over United in the Munich air disaster memorial derby.
Once putting Sven Goran Eriksson’s side 2-0 up in front of the Stretford End, the former Portsmouth star headed straight over to the travelling supporters and conducted the famous pointing celebration – soon after helping to cement his side’s first league double over their bitter rivals in 38 years.
Of course, despite an underwhelming end to his stay at the Etihad, that moment alone practically ensured he was going to be remembered – with supporters reacting to Sam Lee’s exclusive with the player in joy.
Here’s what they had to say.
This is absolutely phenomenal
