Manchester United are bracing for a pivotal summer, regardless of how their season concludes.
If they secure Champions League qualification, reinforcements will be required to cope with a more demanding schedule. If they fall short, strengthening will be just as crucial to mount another push next year.
Alongside recruitment, trimming the squad and reducing the wage bill is expected to be a priority, particularly given the club’s well-documented financial pressures.
And one high-profile name now appears set to depart.
United to Sell Onana
Manchester United are preparing to offload goalkeeper Andre Onana this summer after a disappointing spell at Old Trafford.
The 29-year-old was sent out on loan to Trabzonspor in September following a nightmare performance in United’s shock EFL Cup defeat to League Two side Grimsby. However, the Turkish club are not expected to pursue a permanent deal.
According to talkSPORT, United have no intention of restoring the Cameroon international to their first-team plans once his loan ends. Club officials are understood to accept that they will likely incur a financial loss on the near-£50 million fee paid to Inter Milan in 2023 — a move sanctioned by then-manager Erik ten Hag.
With veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton nearing the end of his contract and uncertainty also surrounding Altay Bayindir’s future, United are widely expected to enter the market for a new shot-stopper ahead of next season.
What once looked like a bold, forward-thinking signing has instead unravelled into a costly misstep.
For a player Pep Guardiola once described as “exceptional,” Onana’s time at Old Trafford appears set to end in disappointment — a difficult conclusion to a chapter that promised far more.
