Roberto Mancini is reportedly ready to swoop for Portuguese winger Ricardo Quaresma. Increasingly superfluous at Inter Milan, Quaresma would greedily gnaw Mancini’s hand off for the opportunity to resurrect a stagnating career.
At a fee thought to be around £7 million, the deal would represent loose change for Sheikh Mansour. However, accused of inconsistency, being short of regular football – often only featuring from the bench – and with City possessing the potential to splash out on more dependable and sought after targets, Quaresma is a slightly curious proposition. Certainly, Mourinho used him sparingly and suggested, though talented, Ricardo lacked the tactical discipline required for his side.
Furthermore, there isn’t a scarcity of comparable wingers at the Eastlands; indicating that Petrov or even Shaun Wright-Philips may be ousted as Mancini sets about moulding his side.
Nevertheless, Ricardo is a gifted player, possessing flair, speed and dexterous dribbling ability; demonstrated most vividly during his time at Porto (2004 to 2008). He undoubtedly hasn’t been handed a myriad of opportunities at the San Siro – attributable to tactics and formation – but has since experienced Premier League action whilst on loan at Chelsea. Still only 26 years old, available at a price facilitating Mancini to splash out elsewhere, and with palpable promise, if Quaresma displayed consistency he could prove a useful signing.
So, worth the stake?
