Southampton supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their side reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup courtesy of a 2-1 victory over West Brom at the Hawthorns on Saturday.
Mauricio Pellegrino’s men got past Fulham and Watford in previous rounds to set up a last 16 meeting with Alan Pardew’s Baggies, who they beat in the Premier League just a few weeks earlier. And the Saints recorded another victory over the top-flight’s bottom side as goals from Wesley Hoedt and Dusan Tadic proved to be enough to edge the Midlands outfit, who did hit back through Salomon Rondon but ultimately were unable to get a second goal to force a replay.
Subsequently, there have been many delighted Southampton fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are enjoying the respite provided by the club’s cup run, what with their side sitting 18th in the Premier League and very much in a relegation battle.
And it is League One promotion contenders Wigan Athletic who stand between the Saints and a place in the Wembley semi-final, after Paul Cook’s men shocked Premier League champions-elect Manchester City 1-0 at the DW Stadium on Monday night.
The Latics have knocked out Bournemouth, West Ham, and now Pep Guardiola’s men en route to the last eight, and will certainly be full of confidence ahead of the visit of Pellegrino’s Southampton to Lancashire next month.
And while several of our resident Saints fans would rather face Wigan than Man City, many supporters on Twitter aren’t overly confident about their side’s chances in the quarter-finals despite this seemingly big boost…
This has Sheffield United away in the League Cup written all over it.

Let’s face it, if after 20 odd years of supporting #saintsfc has taught me anything, it is there’s absolute no way we’re beating Wigan #thesouthamptonway

We’ll lose though

#saintsfc fans acting like that’s us through to the semi finals, let’s not forget Wigan knocked out 3 prem teams, and if they play the counter like today no chance of our defence coping with them.
