Messi replacement lies at Everton according to Argentine hero

As quoted in the Chilean news outlet El Mercurio, former Argentine international Daniel Passarella has said that Everton’s Ramiro Funes Mori should replace Lionel Messi as the national team’s captain.

This statement has naturally shocked more than a few people, and not just the Everton fans, here in the Transfer Tavern considering Funes Mori rarely gets a game for the Toffees with Ashley Williams and Phil Jagielka above him in the pecking order.

The centre-half has played a bit more frequently for the South Americans but, even so, Passarella’s comments are still hard to get around.

In fairness he did captain his country to the 1978 World Cup win and was also involved in the 1986 triumph so maybe he is seeing something we’re missing here by the bar.

He said: “I think Argentina already have a great leader, which is Ramiro Funes Mori. He should be the captain. I admire Messi, but I think his personality, his way of being, is withdrawn and timid.”

Messi famously retired after losing in the Copa America final to Chile earlier this year but backtracked on the decision, and is now setting about helping them qualify for the 2018 World Cup.
