Our Newcastle fans here in the Transfer Tavern are feeling very content today after their latest win but it wasn’t without drama to say the least.
The Magpies went into their game with Burton Albion last night knowing a win was needed to go back in front of Brighton in the Championship table and take control of top spot.
Indeed, they duly beat the Brewers at St. James’ Park, too, but not before Matt Ritchie saw his penalty inexplicably chalked off in favour of an indirect free-kick for the away side.
Confusion, naturally, reigned in light of Keith Stroud’s decision – one he has certainly got wrong – as, after he saw Dwight Gayle encroach during the spot-kick, he should have got the penalty to be retaken, because Ritchie scored.
Instead, though, the visitors were given the chance to clear their lines and the Magpies and Stroud alike can only be grateful it didn’t end up swaying the result.
Twitter, though, hasn’t let him get off lightly and so, with that in mind, here’s the best of what was said:
