Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff had a £50m valuation put on him by the club last summer (as per Daily Mail) but he came in for fierce criticism from a lot of Magpies supporters today.
The 22-year-old was in the line-up that lost 0-1 away to Burnley this afternoon, a result which ended a three-match unbeaten run in the Premier League.
None of Longstaff’s three shots at Turf Moor found the target, while he recorded a passing success rate of just 67.4%, the fourth lowest among Steve Bruce’s starting XI, as he misplaced 14 of his 43 passes. In addition, he failed to pick out a team-mate with any of the four crosses that he attempted. [via WhoScored]
After 10 Premier League appearances this season following today’s defeat, he is still waiting for his first goal and has provided just one assist (as per TransferMarkt), while Chronicle Live writer Lee Ryder said that he “lacked conviction” in the second half against the Clarets.
Longstaff, who had a £50m price tag placed on him a few months ago in the face of interest from Manchester United (as per Daily Mail), bore the brunt of harsh words from these Newcastle fans on Twitter:
joelinton was good today, longstaff looked like a £500,000 player let alone £50m

Is it just me or is Sean Longstaff just behind Declan Rice as the most overrated player in the league?

Seeing Longstaff play like that makes me wish we’d sold him to Man U for that ridiculous amount of money in the summer. Why is he on set pieces when he simply can’t take them? #NUFC

Sean Longstaff can go if he doesn’t want to stay.

Do you think Longstaff was well below his best today? Has he been poor for most of the season for Newcastle? Comment below with your views!
