Newcastle United have confirmed that Steve Bruce has taken over as their new head coach on an initial three-year contract.
The 58-year-old, who has also managed Sunderland among other teams, resigned from his post at Sheffield Wednesday, as reported by BBC Sport, in order to help make the move happen.
He and his staff will meet up with the Newcastle squad in China for the Premier League Asian Trophy after the Magpies lost their first game 4-0 against Wolves.
One thing Newcastle have got with Steve Bruce is experience, as he has 21 years of coaching behind him, which has led to him taking charge of over 900 competitive matches.
392 of those games have come in the Premier League, of which his sides have won 110, drawn 109 and lost 173, scoring 402 goals and conceding 515.
Bruce’s last management role in the top flight of English football came when he earned promotion with Hull City, though after surviving one year he suffered relegation in the 2014/15 season.
While he managed to get them promoted again through the play-offs, he left before the 2016/17 campaign started.
This isn’t the most exciting appointment Newcastle could have made (Micky Quinn even took to Twitter to say he was underwhelmed) and it will likely take a lot of work for him to succeed in getting some of the club’s supporters on side, with a website already set-up calling for his departure.
In truth, appointing a manager who just finished mid-table in the Championship is a bit underwhelming and can be seen as the club showing a lack of ambition.
