Newcastle have been pretty frugal with their money so far this summer.
The north-east club have signed Martin Dubravka, Ki Sung-yueng and most recently Kenedy on loan. The Magpies have avoided shelling out much money to add to their squad and as it stands still need a few more signings.
The club need to look to strengthen in midfield especially as Mikel Merino has now officially joined Real Sociedad. After a fairly average season at Newcastle, the midfielder’s £10 million release clause was triggered by La Real. Merino was a mainstay in Benitez’s starting XI early on in the season but following an injury, the midfielder struggled to regain form and only made seven appearances in the league in the second-half of the season.
An inconsistent player for the Toon, the Geordie faithful haven’t reacted badly due to his departure and in actual fact, a lot of fans seem to be happy that he’s left.
The fact Mikel Merino couldn’t get in the team ahead of a 31 year old midfielder who was written off in all quarters before Christmas probably says everything about where Merino stands in the grand scheme of things.
