A journalist has now revealed that Marc Overmars 'will talk' to Newcastle United over the new Director of Football (DoF) role.

The Lowdown: DoF wanted before manager

As per The Daily Star, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium are keen to appoint a new DoF before they bring in a permanent manager to succeed the departed Steve Bruce.

Jason Wilcox, who is currently the Academy Director at Manchester City, is reportedly the frontrunner, but other names have been mentioned for the role.

The Latest: Overmars talks

According to De Telegraaf journalist Valentijn Driessen (via Voetbal4U), both Overmars and the St. James' Park faithful will talk to each other soon about the DoF position, and suggests that he is interested in the financial muscle that they possess:

"They will soon become concrete and will talk to each other in the short term.

"It's not like he's the new guy there anyway, if he decides to do it. In England, it is common to talk to multiple candidates. Overmars is one of them."

"Of course, you sometimes hear something. He has been with Ajax for ten years now, where he has shown it all. He also knows that at Ajax he can never compete with Bayern Munich or Paris Saint Germain."

The Verdict: Get him in

Overmars has been largely responsible for the success of Ajax over the years as their sporting director, selling a lot of their players for huge profit and then helping rebuild the team with quality replacements.

In this manner, they got to the UEFA Champions League semi-final in the 2018/19 season, only just being pipped by Tottenham Hotspur for a place in the final.

As a bonus, it has been reported that the 48-year-old could well persuade Erik ten Hag to join him, a manager of whom Jurgen Klopp dubbed ‘exciting’ back in December.

Nonetheless, Overmars knows the Premier League well from his time at Arsenal, and would surely turn out to be an inspired appointment.
