Newcastle United: Paul Robinson lauds Callum Wilson and Ryan Fraser

Newcastle United: Paul Robinson lauds Callum Wilson and Ryan Fraser - Newcastle United News

Former Leeds United, Tottenham Hotspur and English international goalkeeper Paul Robinson has lauded the signings that Newcastle United have made in both Callum Wilson and Ryan Fraser.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the pundit claimed:

“They are two fantastic players. It is just a coincidence that they played together at the same club, I do not think that came into Steve Bruce’s reckoning.

“They are going to be a great addition to the team. Newcastle have recruited very, very well in this window with Jeff Hendrick and now Wilson and Fraser. They will all strengthen the starting eleven and make a real difference this season.”

Indeed, both men played with each other at AFC Bournemouth in the 2019/20 term before the Cherries were unfortunately relegated down to the EFL Championship from the Premier League.

However, both Wilson and Fraser still arguably have a lot to offer the Tyneside club and may indeed slot into Steve Bruce’s ideal starting eleven going into the new 2020/21 season as Robinson suggests.

The former has been prolific wherever he has played in his career so far, as in 250 matches across club level and England’s under-21 and senior sides, the striker has scored a relatively impressive 92 goals, according to Transfermarkt, meaning that he finds the back of the net every two to three games on average.

Who was the last club Rafa managed before Newcastle?

On the other hand, Fraser is proven in the top flight, as the Scottish international has scored 16 goals and made a further 29 assists in 120 games in England’s highest division over the last four campaigns, including the 2018/19 term in which he racked up no fewer than 14 assists upon playing with the likes of Wilson (per Transfermarkt).

Comparing the stats of the 26-year old in the lasts eason in the EPL to those of fellow attacking midfield players Allan Saint-Maximin, Christian Atsu and Miguel Almiron, Fraser averaged more key passes, crosses and long balls per appearance than the Toon trio (via WhoScored).

Should Fraser start for Newcastle?

Nonetheless, both players may well turn out to be fantastic additions to the Magpies squad as Robinson has claimed.
